“Just-In-Time” Behavior Project (JITB)
The “Just-In-Time” Behavior Project (JITB) is
designed to help the district rethink and revamp the way it approaches discipline
giving teachers practical tips they can apply right away. This project will
make prevention the No. 1 priority by building a network of mentors among
teachers and administrators.
Just-In-time is about trying to get behind behavior, understanding what makes
people and students resistant; allowing your staff to use behavior management
techniques they’re comfortable with rather than insisting on a cookie-cutter
discipline method.

JIT Participant Comments Regarding 3-Day Trainings:
“Instead of reacting to behavior I need to stay ahead of the behavior
by targeting the behavior, seeing how the behavior happens, why the behavior
happens, and when the behavior happens. Once I learned to look at those four
things, most of my behavior issues were taken care of and any other behavior
problems that used to stem from the initial problems went away.”
“I feel the most important thing that I brought away from the training
is the ability to drop the ‘us’ versus ‘them’ attitude
that comes with years of teaching. Dr. Hartwig really made me take a new look
at how I was teaching and what I needed to change. I found that teaching was
fun again, conflicts in the classroom decreased and more instructional time
was used for instruction, not to discipline or keep order.”
“The Behavior Initiative Training helped me to focus on replacement behavior
instead of punishment.”
“We learned a multitude of ideas that can be implemented into class instruction,
shared with other teachers, and used as interventions for student support team
members. Especially helpful was the functional analysis interview questions,
the case studies that provided concrete examples, and the discussions on replacement
behaviors.”
“We certainly need to work on replacement behaviors and appropriate consequences
(restitution). The caution that we will see incremental improvements over time
was realistic…and refreshing!”
“Dr. Hartwig made me look at the positive side of a situation. He helped
me to realize that consequences don’t fix the problem. I need to understand
the problem and child to fix it.”
