| The role of the
Program Support Teacher (PST) is to assist the special education administrative/instructional
personnel in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs
and services. The Program Support Teacher's primary responsibility is
to focus upon services to children with disabilities and to special education
and regular education teachers in the areas of diagnosis and intervention
procedures, classroom management, curriculum development, instructional
methods, educational diagnosis and instructional materials and equipment. |
- Ongoing support to new
and provisionally certified staff.
- Assist new and provisionally
certified teachers in gaining knowledge and skill in the areas of
the IEP Team process and procedures through consultation, inservicing,
and dissemination of information on the referral process, assessment
process/instrument, report and IEP writing, and reviewing/critiquing
teacher reports.
- Assist teachers in selecting
and implementing appropriate instructional methods, learning strategies,
materials and equipment to meet individual student needs and learning
styles. Encourage experimentation with new techniques.
- Assist teachers in identifying
classroom structure and organization, physical arrangements, scheduling,
and grouping of students that are most conducive to learning.
- Assist teacher in developing
behavior management system (classroom rules and associated positive
and negative consequences).
- Assist in identifying
inappropriate student behaviors and assist the teacher in developing
and implementing individual behavior management programs to alleviate
specific behavioral concerns.
- Identify teacher needs
through Needs Assessment and on-going communication. Identify sources
of personal and professional help for teachers.
- Support existing staff
on an as needed basis.
- Assist in educational
evaluations of students when specialized assessment is required.
- Complete evaluations
of students in cases where fully certified or provisionally certified
teacher is not available to complete the evaluation.
- Assist and train new
and provisionally certified teachers in the completion of educational
evaluations.
- Provide consultative
services to teachers, Pupil Service staff on specific cases.
- Assist in identifying
inservice needs and planning/implementing inservices in areas of need.
- Serve on Inservice Advisory
Committee to assist Staff Development Coordinator in assessing staff
inservice needs.
- Provide inservice training
to new staff at the beginning of the school year.
- Make all staff aware
of upcoming inservices, workshops, and conventions through on-going
contracts and newsletter.
- Assist in development
of new/innovative programming.
- Assist in exploring innovative
programs, approaches, materials to expand services provided by Marathon
County Special Education.
- Assist in exploring sources
of supplemental funding for program costs.
- Formulate plan for program
implementation.
- Assist in coordinating
program implementation.
- Serve as liaison between
special education staff (teachers, aides, VTS) and special education
administration and Pupil Service Staff.
- Obtain and disseminate
curricular and instructional information, methods, materials and equipment.
